KOFM Presents PCYC Nations of Origin

Nations of Origin is a multifaceted sport, cultural, education and leadership program which culminates during NAIDOC week annually. The program has 4 main components: reconciliation, education, cultural identity and sport. It is aimed at increasing school retention with all participants required to have an 80 per cent school attendance to be eligible to participate. All participating sporting teams must consist of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal young people with a ratio of 70:30 in the formation of the teams.

Cultural identity is a focal point of the project with all teams representing their community under their traditional local Aboriginal nation name from their area, with uniforms adorned with totems of their Aboriginal nation. This provides an opportunity for non-Aboriginal young people to learn about their local Aboriginal culture and foster relationships and understanding between local cultures.

More than 1200 young rugby league, football, netball and basketball players and boxers from around NSW will compete at the sixth PCYC NSW Nations of Origin tournament in July.

Being held in the Hunter from July 16 to 19, 97 teams from 25 NSW Aboriginal nations playing under 16s boys’ and girls’ rugby league 7s, under 14s boys’ and girls’ football fives and under 14s netball will joined this year by 36 under 14s and 16s “3×3” basketball teams and 30 under 16s boxers.
