Newcastle's new light rail service will have almost no overhead wires.
The state government has announced each tram will hold its own charge and will be recharged at each station, rather than relying on continuous overhead power.
Transport Minister Andrew Constance says it will be the only network of its kind in Australia.
"It's charge points will be actually at the stations."
"It does mean that you won't see catenary down Hunter Street. It will show those vehicles being propelled by themselves without that overhead wiring."
"I think it will add to the aesthetic of a mass transit solution."
