2:54PM

Newcastle Airport has grounded all flights until at least 8:30pm tonight due to fire activity. Contact your airline for more information. 

11:37am - Newcastle Airport has grounded all flights due to water bombing activity and increased smoke from the nearby bushfire. The situation will be reviewed at 2:30pm and the airfield will potentially re-open at 3pm.

"The safety of our passengers is paramount and we will continue to work with local emergency authorities to monitor the nearby fire and provide more information to the public as it becomes available," the airport said in a statement.

6:21am Monday - Firefighters have worked through the night backburning at Campvale trying to bring the fire under control. Easing weather conditions helped them gain the upper hand, allowing the threat to be downgraded even further to the Advice level. The fire continues to burn around Richardson Road.

It's now burnt through 2228 hectares, but thankfully there's been no property loss. The RFS hopes to have the fire fully contained by this afternoon, subject to today's forecast strong winds.

Newcastle Airport has re-opened this morning and flights are running to schedule. Extra flights have been put on today.

7:14pm - Firefighters are slowly gaining the upper hand on the Tomago bushfire thanks to easing easing conditions.

The RFS has downgraded the threat level to Watch and Act.

However residents in Campvale and south of Medowie are urged to remain vigilant tonight.

"There is still a lot of fire in the environment there, so there is the potential that with the winds predicted to come through tonight, that could see an increase in fire behaviour and could see an increase in the alert level, so we're not out of the woods just yet" Paul Best from the RFS said.

6:38pm - The Tomago bushfire is burning near homes in Wade Close, Campvale, after crossing Richardson Road. Residents in the area are being told to seek shelter. The Very Large Air Tanker 'Nancy Bird' has been helping slow the spread of the fire.

5:26pm - The RFS says the Tomago bushfire is expected to reach Wade Close at Campvale within the next half an hour. Firefighters are in position to protect homes.

The fire remains at the Emergency warning level and is being fanned by gale force southerly winds.

Residents in Richardson Road, Grahamstown Road, Harvest Road, Pastures Drive, Medowie Road and Wade Close are being told to seek shelter as the fire approaches.

The strong winds are expected to continue into the night, and the RFS is warning ash and embers may blow towards homes in Medowie.

Richardson Road remains closed, however some tried to get past the police road block.

3:09pm Sunday - The Tomago bushfire has been upgraded to the Emergency level, fanned by strong winds.

Residents in the vicinity of Richardson Road, Grahamstown Road, Harvest Road, Pastures Drive, Medowie Road and Wade Close, Campvale, are advised to seek shelter as the fire approaches.

Residents in the Medowie township should also monitor conditions and be aware that ash and embers may fall within the area.

Richardson Road has been closed between Benjamin Lee Drive and Medowie Road. Flights have been disrupted again at Newcastle Airport. Passengers are urged to check with their airline.

7:42pm Saturday - The threat to properties from the Tomago bushfire has been downgraded even further to the Advice level.

Firefighters will remain in the area overnight as they work to contain the fire.

Backburning may be undertaken across the fireground if weather conditions allow.

Residents in the vicinity of Benjamin Lee Drive, Raymond Terrace and those in the area of Richardson Road, Campvale, are advised to continue to monitor the situation and take advice from firefighters on the ground.

Firefighters will continue to mop up and black out in the area of Barry Close, Cabbage Tree Rd and Massonite Rd and areas close to the Newcastle Airport along Williamtown Drive, Technology Place, Kindler Way, Cresswell Way, Slades Road, Sandeman Street and Moxey Close. Residents should continue to monitor the situation and take advice from firefighters on the ground.

All roads are now open.

5:59pm - The RFS has downgraded the Tomago fire to Watch and Act thanks to easing conditions. Light rain has also fallen on the fireground.

Residents on the south eastern side of Raymond Terrace and those in the area of Campvale, are advised to continue to monitor the situation and take advice from firefighters on the ground.

4:57pm - Richardson Road is now closed between Benjamin Lee Road and Medowie Road as the Tomago bushfire moves north towards Campvale and Raymond Terrace.

The RFS is urging residents on the south eastern side of Raymond Terrace and those in the area of Campvale to seek shelter as the fire approaches.

A stronger southerly change is expected at 7pm tonight.

4:22pm - Residents in the area of Richardson Road at Campvale are advised to seek shelter as the bushfire approaches.

The fire is now burning in a northerly direction, fanned by strong southerly winds.

Residents in Barry Close, Cabbage Tree Rd and Massonite Rd and areas close to Newcastle Airport along Williamtown Drive, Technology Place, Kindler Way, Cresswell Way, Slades Road, Sandeman Street and Moxey Close should continue to monitor the situation and take advice from firefighters on the ground.

4:06pm - Newcastle Airport has confirmed all flights are cancelled for the rest of the day.

3:52pm - The southerly change has hit the Tomago fireground, pushing the fire north towards Richardson Road.

The RFS says this will relieve the threat on homes along Cabbage Tree Road.

Nelson Bay Road remains open.

3:10pm - Parts of Cabbage Tree Road, Masonite Road and Nelson Bay Road are closed. Meantime the DC-10 water bomber has arrived.

 

3:02pm - Newcastle Airport says flights are being disrupted by the bushfire, however the terminal remains open. Passengers are urged to check with their airlines.

2:45pm - The RFS says the fire has reached Barry Close and is continuing to move towards Newcastle Airport.

Residents in Barry Close, Cabbage Tree Rd and Masonite Rd and areas close to Newcastle Airport along Williamtown Drive, Technology Place, Kindler Way, Cresswell Way, Slades Road, Sandeman Street and Moxey Close are advised to shelter in place as it is to late to leave.

A DC-10 aircraft is on its way.

Sections of Cabbage Tree Road and Masonite Road are closed.

1:54pm - An emergency warning has been issued for a bushfire threatening homes at Tomago.

The fire has burnt through 28 hectares around Masonite Rd and is moving in an easterly direction towards Newcastle Airport.

Waterbombers are being sent in to help ground crews.

Residents in Barry Close, Cabbage Tree Rd and Massonite Rd are advised to shelter in place, as it's too late to leave.

The fire is being fanned by strong north-westerly winds.
