Police are on the hunt for the persons responsible for vandalising two Hunter war memorials over the weekend.
A park in Gillieston Heights named after Victoria Cross recipient Joseph Maxwell has been targeted following its public unveiling just last Wednesday.
The newly laid turf was ripped up and a Lone Pine planted at the memorial was torn out of the ground.
Maitland Mayor Peter Blackmore is urging anyone who may know more to come forward.
"You can't just do that in the still of night. Somebody must have seen what was going on."
While the World War I cenotaph near Queen and Grey Streets at Clarence Town has also been defaced.
Someone has scrawled the initials 'AC' and 'AB' on the memorial in black marker at some stage between last Wednesday and Friday.
Detective Inspector Scott Parker from Port Stephens Police says it's disgusting behaviour.
"Memorials such as this are a reflection of the pride and appreciation that the community has for service men and women, past and present."
