The Hunter's Surprise Baby Deliveries

New figures from the NSW Ambulance Service have revealed just how many babies are coming into the world unexpectedly - outside of the hospital.

Last year paramedics were called to 40 surprise deliveries in the Hunter, from Murrays Beach to Raymond Terrace.

While across NSW there were 320 unexpected deliveries.

Paramedics say it can be a daunting experience for the mum and the bystanders called on to deliver a child.

“Each year, call takers play a direct role in the safe delivery of hundreds of babies,” NSW Ambulance control Division director Jamie Vernon said.

“Dialling Triple Zero (000) ensures an ambulance is immediately dispatched and, in the meantime, essential instructions can be provided until paramedics arrive.

“This can include advice on placing the mother in the most comfortable position, when to push, and supporting the baby as it makes its way into the world.

“Often our call takers have been on the line right through to delivery to celebrate the birth of the child.”
