Surfer Jake Sylvester Seriously Injured In Coward Punch Attack

UPDATE: Police have now charged a 22 year old Mayfield man over the one-punch attack on surfer Jake Sylvester.

He handed himself into Waratah Police Station at midday on Sunday.

He's been granted conditional bail and will appear in Newcastle Local Court on March 16.

EARLIER: Popular Merewether surfer Jake Sylvester has been seriously injured in a one-punch attack in Newcastle.

The 23 year old had been ejected from the Family Hotel in Steel Street on Friday night.

A scuffle then took place outside the pub, where he was punched to the head and knocked to the ground.

Police say the attack was "unprovoked".

Sylvester was rushed to the John Hunter where he remains in a serious but stable condition with a fractured skull.

Police were alerted to the incident on Saturday afternoon and are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.
