Two sisters aged just four and two have been removed from their parents' care after being found home alone at Nelson Bay.
The eldest girl was discovered walking along Government Road by herself just before 2am last Sunday.
A passerby called police and the girl was able to indicate where her home was.
Officers went to the unit and then discovered the girl's two year old sister asleep in her cot.
Police called the girl's parents who later arrived at the unit.
The mum was searched, with officers allegedly finding cannabis and ice in her handbag.
They've both been charged with abandoning a child under 7 and drug possession.
They'll face Raymond Terrace Local Court on November 27.
