Shark nets are being installed off the Hunter's coast from today ahead of summer.
More than 50 will be put in place between Newcastle and Wollongong to protect beachgoers.
Nets will be installed off Stockton, Nobbys, Newcastle, Bar, Dixon Park, Merewether, Redhead, Blacksmiths, Caves, Catherine Hill Bay until April next year.
However the Greens have raised concerns about their impact on marine life, and are calling for SMART drumlines to be used instead.
“Shark nets may make ocean goers feel better but the evidence shows they are not effective against target sharks and don’t make swimmers or surfers significantly safer," Greens MLC Justin Field said.
