A police officer has been brutally attacked while trying to help a woman at Shoal Bay.
The 54 year old sergeant was with another officer patrolling Shoal Bay Road on Friday night, when they spotted a man talking to a woman.
The sergeant spoke to the man about his behaviour, when the accused became aggressive.
It's claimed he punched the officer in the head with provocation, with men falling to the ground in a violent struggle.
The second officer came to assist, when another unknown man approached the sergeant and kicked him in the head.
Both men then fled.
A 19 year old man was later tracked down with help from security officers.
He's been charged with assault police officer occasioning actually bodily harm and resist arrest.
He's been given bail and will face court on June 19.
The sergeant was taken to the Mater Hospital suffering concussion and an arm injury.
He's now on sick leave.
