Security Boosted For Newcastle Anzac Day Services

Garbage trucks to be used as road blocks

Security Boosted For Newcastle Anzac Day Services

Extra security measures will be in place for next week’s Anzac Day commemorations in Newcastle.

A number of council garbage trucks will be used to block off roads around services, to prevent vehicle terror attacks.

Superintendent John Gralton says the trucks are simply there as a precaution.

"They are a large vehicle that can act as a barrier. It's all about our depth of defence, but I want to be clear there's no specific threat at this point in time," he said.

Newcastle Buses were used as barricades for the first time during Australia Day celebrations in Honeysuckle this year.

The measures are a result of terrorist attacks overseas, including at Nice where a truck was deliberately driven into crowds of people celebrating Bastille Day, killing 86.
