The State Government is investigating whether scammers are targeting businesses and families in Kurri Kurri following this week's super storm.
Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald visited the area after widespread damage was caused by dangerous winds, rain and hail and heard at least one report of potentially dodgy dealings.
"I spoke to a business and someone had knocked on their door offering to help fill out their insurance claim for a fee."
"You've just got to be careful."
"It might be legitimate, but equally if you've got insurance there's no reason you shouldn't be able to fill that out yourself or get the help of the company."
Mr MacDonald has spoken to the Office of Fair Trading about the matter.
