It's emerged the Hunter's high schools are the most overcrowded in the state.
The latest Auditor-General's report shows that 41 per cent of our region's secondary schools are at or over capacity, more than anywhere else.
35 per cent of the Hunter's primary schools are at or over capacity.
Shadow Minister for the Hunter Kate Washington fears the problem is only going to get worse as our population continues to grow.
"From Medowie to Maitland, from Lake Macquarie to Charlestown, communities have been calling for more secondary schooling to support population growth. But unfortunately the state government hasn't listened, and the calls have fallen on deaf ears," she said.
"In Medowie, we have been asking for a high school for so long. We know that will take pressure off the school system everywhere."
