Popular Charlestown Carpark To Close

Finding a park in Charlestown is about to get a little harder.

The temporary carpark that's operated on the old school site in Smith Street in recent years has been sold by Lake Macquarie City Council and is likely to be turned into apartments.

The site became a carpark to alleviate parking issues during construction of the Charlestown Square redevelopment in 2009.

However council says it was never meant to be a long-term option.

“We understand users of the temporary carpark may be inconvenienced; however, this particular car park was never intended to be a permanent facility, and there are many alternate locations nearby that can be utilised,” council's Manager Property and Business Development Kate Cramp said.

Council's listed the following sites as alternatives:

  • Charlestown Square - timed, free and paid
  • Smith Street carpark (next to Charlestown Library) - free, timed
  • Tallara Street carpark - free, all-day
  • On-street parking is available throughout the town centre - free, timed
