Tragedy has struck the Upper Hunter, with the body of a woman found in a car swept away by a torrent of water.
The 64-year-old and her 74-year-old husband were driving along a causeway on a property at Gungal when their vehicle got caught in floodwaters at about 9pm on Thursday.
The man escaped, however his wife was trapped inside and washed away.
Police say the man searched “throughout the night” for his partner without success, alerting police at 8:30am on Friday.
Police divers searched the Worondo Riveulet and found the woman’s body in the car at about 5pm, submerged in 4 metres of water.
It comes as New South Wales and Queensland continue to battle the torrential rain and damaging winds brought on by ex-Cyclone Debbie.
