Newcastle Airport says it's working very hard on securing new domestic routes out of Williamtown, with a direct service to Adelaide the "most likely".
It follows news yesterday that international flights are on the horizon, with work starting on customs, quarantine and immigration facilities.
Airport CEO Peter Cock says the focus is on Adelaide at the moment.
"We're actually working with one airline in particular on starting an Adelaide route...that's the most likely (new destination) we're going to get," he said.
"However we don't take other routes off the radar. There are (new) routes to Queensland we're looking at as well, including Cairns and the Sunshine Coast."
A direct service to Perth is also being considered.
