Controversial long-serving mayor of Port Stephens Bruce Mackenzie has confirmed he will run again for the top job at the September council election, ending speculation about his future.
49 years after first being elected to council, he's told KOFM he feels he has no choice to put his hand up for re-election.
"Looking at the field, especially for the mayor's job, I believe I have no alternative but to stand," he said.
"There are that many light-weights who've put their hand up, I'm concerned about some of them being elected to council."
"The last thing I want to see is Port Stephens go down hill, which could happen if party politics plays a role."
"I've got a lot of support out there. I've got detractors but they don't interest me."
