The family of cop killer Rick Maddison have sent their condolences to the grieving family of Brett Forte and the Queensland police.
Maddison gunned down Senior Constable Forte in a deadly ambush west of Brisbane on Monday afternoon before being killed in a shootout on Tuesday morning following a 21-hour siege.
"The Maddison family wishes to express our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the late Senior Constable Brett Forte for their tragic loss," the family said in a statement.
"We express our support for the Queensland Police Service and the often difficult and dangerous work its officers are required to undertake".
The Maddison family thanked the police negotiators at the scene of the siege in the Lockyer Valley who tried to resolve the situation peacefully.
The family didn't excuse Maddison's actions but referred to him as a "loved son, brother, nephew, uncle, grandson, friend and mate to many and as such will be sadly mourned".
While thanking the public for their condolences, the family asked that people respect their privacy and allow them to grieve.
"We ask both the press and the public to accept the pain and remorse we are feeling and to respect our privacy at this very difficult time".
