The man behind our beloved Big Mac has passed away, at 98 years old.
A McDonalds franchisee from Pittsburgh, Michael "Jim" Delligatti created the signature burger back in 1967 using the famous double-ups of everything...two all-beef patties, a "special sauce," lettuce, cheese, pickles and onions on a sesame seed bun.
Initially, he left out the 'middle' bun.. but "making it that way made it very sloppy. The next day we put the centre slice in, and today it looks the same."
It was the following year, 1968, before the burger went national, and only after several trials at getting the right name.
McDonald's has confirmed, overnight, that Jim passed away surrounded by his family on Monday night.
The company described Jim as a "legendary" person, who "made a lasting impression on our brand".
