When Clicking Unsubscribe Doesn't Work

Australia has pretty tough laws against Spam. Not the tasty meat in a can, usually reserved for camping trips... but the pesky emails which jam your inbox in the hundreds.

Under the Spam Act 2003 it is illegal to send unsolicited commercial electronic messages. And it doesn't just mean email, but also instant messages and text messages. The media police take the rules very seriously.

Internet service provider TPG has been slapped with a $360,000 fine after a probe by the Australian Communications and Media Authority. The media watchdog started sniffing around after complains from consumers they were still getting commercial emails despite clicking to unsubscribe.

The probe pinpointed the problem, TPG’s systems were not properly processing unsubscribe requests.

If you're getting spammed by a company, especially if you've clicked "unsubscribe", you can report it to the ACMA by forwarding the message to report@submit.spam.acma.gov.au. You can also forward dodgy SMS spam to the Spam SMS service on 0429 999 888.
