Australia is set to launch a bid to host the Women's World Cup in 2023.

Supported by the federal government, the 24-team tournament could be hosted by one of Australia's capitals according to News Corp.

Ranked eighth in the world the Matildas would gain automatic qualification and will be one of the favourites to take out the prestigious competition, after reaching the quarter finals at the last two World Cups.

Its believed the federal government has pledged $1 million in initial funding and will commit a further $4 million in December if Australia is deemed a reasonable hosting prospect.
