Friends and family are paying tribute to Australian Solider Jason Challis.

The Victorian man, aged in his 20's, died during an Army training exercise in the Northern Territory on Wednesday afternoon.

It is understood he sustained a gunshot wound to the head while doing live fire training at Mount Bundey Training Area near Darwin at about 12.45pm.

He suffered severe head injuries and died in hospital.

Friends are reaching out on Facebook after receiving news of the young man's death.

"Last year I had the pleasure of instructing this fine young man in my section, always with a smile on his face and a great attitude," One friend wrote in a Facebook Tribute post.

"Mate you will be missed. Just writing these few words about you mate brings a tear to my eyes. RIP Jason Challis"

His death followed the death of Stuart Reddan during a training exercise at Shoalwater Bay this week.

All training activities by Australian combat brigades have been suspended in the wake of the deaths.

Defence Minister Maurice Payne earlier sent us the following statement:

It is with great sadness I acknowledge the death of an Australian Army soldier on 10 May at the Mount Bundey Training Area in the Northern Territory.

Whether on deployment or while training, the men and women of the Australian Defence Force undertake hazardous activities to ensure our safety and security.

On behalf of the Government I extend my deepest personal sympathies to the soldier's family, friends and ADF colleagues.
