A father and son are among twelve people seriously injured after a car sprayed burning fuel at crowds at a racing event in Alice Springs.

The father, a 48 year old from New South Wales, was airlifted to Adelaide alongside his injured teenage son. The 48 year old is fighting for life, while the son has burns to up to 20 per cent of his body, including his face.

Another of the injured event goers has taken to Facebook saying his love of skids hasn't been deterred.

Thousands of people have been in Alice Springs for the event, which brings motoring enthusiasts from across the country to Central Australia.

Organisers shut down the event as soon as the incident unfolded, while fire and police crews are investigating.
